This Ridiculous Hot Tub Is Larger Than Some New York Apartments [Hot Tubs]

We understand the appeal of kicking back at the end of a long day in a warm jet of bubbles. But it looks like the Luxema 8000 hot tub could fill an entire backyard, let alone a cheap New York apartment. More »

BlackBerry 10 to get video editor, screen sharing according to forum leak

Image

The Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha we wrapped our mitts around last week didn’t tell us much about RIM’s big QNX-based OS update (being loaded with PlayBook OS 2.0 and all), but Crackberry forum user Biggulpseh seemingly has the deets that the folks in Waterloo weren’t ready to reveal. So-called internal documents reportedly detail a tilt-senstive lock screen that pushes notifications to the user based on the device’s movement (called “cinnamon toast”), a screen-sharing ability to ramp up the productivity of video calls and a robust video editor resulting from RIM’s acquisition of JayCut last year. Biggulpseh says the images come from a “trusted source,” and are part of a document that outlines upcoming features for the benefit of the firm’s employees. Ready to dive in and let your imagination run wild? Hit the source links below, just don’t forget your saliferous spices.

PSA: Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE up for pre-order today, release date still unknown

In case you took a pass on that Sprint-branded GNex or the LG Viper 4G in order to wait it out for HTC’s EVO 4G LTE, well, now’s the time to get your wallet ready and unleash the cash. As promised, The Now Network has the LTE-friendly EVO priced at $199.99 (50 bucks less on Wirefly) with a beloved two-year contract, while those ineligible for an upgrade will have to shell out around $550. That being said, chances are you won’t get to surf those Long Term Evolution waves when you get device, but at least you’ll be all set once the rollout finally commences. While Sprint’s yet to give an official release date, Wirefly (somewhat reliable in the past) does say the ICS / Sense 4 slab will be shipping on May 18th. Be sure to hit either of the source links below to get your pre-order on.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sony Smartwatch SDK update adds open source music player and puzzle game extensions

Still wishing for some more functionality on Sony’s touch-friendly watch? Well there’s good news if you’re into slider puzzles and music playing apps, as both of these have arrived open source in the SmartWatch’s latest SDK. The music extension will allow devs to start work on their own music player, already including support for Android’s generic music player. The 8 Game extension doesn’t elaborate on what you’ll be able to extend from the original image shifting puzzler, but we’ll leave that up to developers’ imaginations. You can get the full rub and all downloads at the source, just dial down that enthusiasm a little — the wait for a few more features continues.

Ariel Atom-inspired simulator touts world’s first 180-degree spherical projector screen (video)

Image

The Ariel Atom is arguably one of the greatest bangs for the buck in terms of sports car performance, so it’s no surprise that the automaker has paired up with Motion Simulation to design a particularly special simulator for both hardcore fans as well pro racing drivers and pilots. The TL1 has the world’s first 180-degree spherical projection unit (technically, three projector screens acting as one) to give you that advance view of the apex without display bezels getting in the way. Its seat not only adjusts to fit different breeds of cars and aircraft but, if you opt for it, tucks in a motion transducer that will properly jolt you when you hit a bump in the road. What may please extra-serious racing game fans the most is the off-the-shelf nature of the computer needed to drive the TL1 properly: as long as your graphics hardware can handle the extra-wide 5760 x 1200 resolution, any typical Windows XP or Windows 7 desktop will do. The real question is whether your wallet can handle it, as the £11,500 ($18,573) PC-less starting price will make it tempting to buy a real Atom instead.

Full Feeds Service Discontinued

Unfortunatly the time has come for this scraper to come down (seemingly it may come as a shock to some that this is not provided by the BBC). I wrote this back in 2005 and have modified it a couple of times since mainly so that I could more easily consume RSS on the move. In short, I no longer use it, I find consuming live news is not actually something an RSS reader does very well and I face a constant battle against sites trying to use these feeds to monetize BBC content and failing to pay any attention to etag or last modified headers (hello palin-pedia.com et al). Please update your RSS subscription as the last remenants of this will be removed soon , the official BBC RSS feed you are looking for is: http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml

In Milan, more residents answer to Hu than Ferrari

A list of the most common names in Milan revealed the extent to which immigration has changed the character of the business-oriented city.?

For decades the family name of ?Brambilla? has been by far the most common in Milan ? to the point that throughout Italy, where family names were originally strongly associated with geography, people still jokingly refer to Milan folks as ?Mister Brambillas? or ?Sciur Brambilla? (?sciur? being the world for ?Sir??in Milanese dialect).?

So when the local council published a list of the most common names in the city last week, many were surprised to find out that Milan has many more residents known as ?Mister Hu? than ?Mister Brambilla.?

Among the ten most common family names in Milan, three were of Chinese origin, pointing out how ethnically diverse this city in northern Italy has become. On the list, ?Rossi,” a name common in Italy but not closely associated with the North, comes first, while Hu, of Chinese origin, is a close second. They are followed by five other typically Italian (but not typical specifically of Milan) names. In eighth is another Chinese name, Chen, while uber-Milanese ?Brambilla? comes only ninth, followed by yet another Chinese name, Zhou.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

In the last three decades, a growing numbers of migrants, both from the rest of Italy and from abroad, have settled in Milan, mostly drawn by job prospects in the most business-oriented region of the country. Today one in every five Milan residents is either a foreign national or a descendant of migrant workers.

The Chinese community is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the first wave of the immigration in the early 1900s. While some other nationalities, particularly from?Eastern Europe and North Africa,?are more numerous, Chinese names are predominant because there is less variety among last names.

?To us this whole comes as no surprise,? Luigi Sun, a representative of Milan’s Chinese community of Milan, told the daily newspaper?Republica. ?We have known for a long time Hu is one of the most common names in the city. We have more serous stuff to think about.?

The most common names in Milan:?

  1. Rossi (Italy’s most common name)
  2. Hu (Chinese)
  3. Colombo (most common in northern Italy, but not necessarily associated with Milan; the famous explorer Cristoforo Colombo, known in English as Christopher Columbus, was from Genoa)
  4. Ferrari (associated both with central and northern Italy)
  5. Bianchi (another very common name throughout the country)
  6. Russo (a variant of Rossi)
  7. Villa (a typical Milan name)
  8. Chen (Chinese)
  9. Brambilla (once thought to be Milan’s most common name)
  10. Zhou (Chinese)
